Eternal State – 1

A man wakes up on a small island in the middle of a lake.
He is lying on grass – on his back, clothed in brown.
He rises, and sees a contemporary red house, trees and two cars on the island.
But no road from the island to the mainland.
He doesn’t know who he is anymore.
Man: “I don’t know who I am anymore.”
He looks down at his arms – he is wearing a cloak. He finds this strange.
A slight pain in his head – he feels it – and feels that he is wearing a hood.
Surprised, he removes it. The pain remains.
He walks to the house and knocks on the door. No one responds. He tries the door, it opens.
Inside is oppressive darkness.
With the one hand on the open door, he knocks absently on the doorknob.
He feels concern and a dash of wonder, and then he calls out:
Man: “Hello?! Hello, I say!”
He steps into the hall and closes the door. Though there are windows, he finds it difficult to see.
There are hallways left, straight – without windows, and thus, the darkest – and to the right.
A strident female voice, muffled from upstairs, directly above, freezes him:
Woman: “Hello to YOU!”
He takes two careful steps down the left hallway.
The voice again:
Woman: “I says!”
He stops and shouts,
Man: “Hi, I don’t mean to be-”
The voice interrupts:
Woman: “You don’t know what’s going on! You don’t know who you are!”
A pause. The man’s eyes squint in confusion and wonder. He yells:
Man: “That’s right.”
Then, something he could not understand, or it was misheard:
Woman: “And you have sixty auras!”
He yells:
Man: “I didn’t understand that, can we talk? Downstairs?”
No answers.
Eager for some, he confidently walks down the left hallway. It is narrow and follows the windows.
It turns right at the point where it meets the other side of the house. He continues to walk.
This continues twice more – just wall on the right, windows on the left.
And he finds himself back at the beginning.
The left is the right, and both lead to the door.
Voiceover (thoughtful): “The left is the right, and both lead to the door.”
Somewhat distressed, he shouts out:
Man: “Ma’am…can you come downstairs please?”
Nothing. Then she responds:
Woman: “No, I am upstairs–”
She shrieks in fear – or pain.
Lacking any further patience, his eyes try to penetrate the blackness of the center hallway. He shakes his head and turns for the door.
He says loudly:
Man: “Great! Thanks!”
He opens the door and walks out.
